Fossil shark tooth, Otodus, from Morocco.The Otodus obliquus shark was a giant Mackerel shark with large triangular teeth with distinct cusps on the roots. This shark was the ancestor of the giant shark Megalodon. It existed during the upper Paleocene to Lower Eocene age, about 60 to 45 million years ago. A very large predatory shark, it had teeth up to about 4 inches in length. It was approximately 30 feet long but probably reached lengths up to 40 feet. It had a diet of marine animals such as large bony fish and other sharks and was one of the top predators of its time.
